Water sampling bottles given new purpose

Patent 5 is pouring something other than premium spirits these days — the generous staff at the Exchange District distillery are using their equipment (and their skills) to make hand sanitizer in an effort to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

The team at Patent 5 is donating every bottle, free of charge, to local non-profits supporting Winnipeg’s most vulnerable populations. We saw this story in the news and realized we could help.

Spring is usually a busy time for Lake Winnipeg Community-Based Monitoring Network (LWCBMN) volunteers — they head out to their designated sites to collect water samples that will later be tested for phosphorus concentration. LWF staff normally equips LWCBMN volunteers with sampling kits that include small bottles for water collection but this year, we adapted our protocol to comply with public health recommendations. To minimize physical contact, we could not assemble or drop off the usual kits. LWCBMN volunteers who are willing and able to sample this season are now using an alternative sampling procedure, but we still found ourselves with a bag of empty bottles.

Our next step was simple: reach out to Patent 5 and donate them. We’re proud to make this contribution to help protect our community.

If you want to lend a hand, head to Patent 5’s Instagram or Patent 5’s Facebook pages where you can see what supplies are needed to make more hand sanitizer. At the time of publishing, the distillery is looking for glycerin, aloe vera, hydrogen peroxide and small bottles (60-100 milliliters).

If you are a non-profit serving vulnerable populations, contact Patent 5. Due to an overwhelming response from community organizations, they are only taking delivery requests via email: info@patent5.ca.

Your gift makes a healthy Lake Winnipeg possible.
