World Wetlands Day 2017, a new online resource for citizens and more!

Dear LWF supporter,

We’ve spent the first month of 2017 reflecting on the progress we made together in 2016, connecting with our partners and strategizing in anticipation of another busy year.

Feb. 2 is World Wetlands Day, celebrated annually to mark the United Nations’ 1971 adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, an international framework for wetland conservation and use. This year’s theme is “Wetlands for Disaster Risk Reduction,” chosen in recognition of the important role healthy wetlands play in reducing the impacts of extreme weather events.

In this co-written opinion piece published in the Winnipeg Free Press, LWF’s executive director Alexis Kanu and Ducks Unlimited Canada’s director of regional operations (Prairie region) Scott Stephens bring a local perspective to this theme, highlighting the connection between water management, flood prevention and cost-effective fiscal policy.

Protecting Manitoba’s threatened wetlands through strong legislation will help protect the health of Lake Winnipeg. You can read more about World Wetlands Day on our website.

LWF advocacy efforts are now online

Sharing information through local media is just one way we advance our mission. We also work behind the scenes to bring the collective voice of our membership to the tables of decision-makers, advocating for evidence-based solutions to manage phosphorus loading across the watershed.

Interested in learning more about our advocacy efforts? Our website’s new “For Citizens” section contains some of our recent government policy submissions. We remain committed to championing evidence-based solutions for the health of our shared waters.

Help give local lake champions the recognition they deserve!

Named in honour of the pioneering Lake Winnipeg researcher, our Alexander Bajkov Award is presented annually to those who exemplify Dr. Bajkov’s dedication to the understanding of Lake Winnipeg, and who demonstrates outstanding efforts to protect and restore the lake and its watershed.

Past recipients have included scientists, journalists, educators – and even an entire conservation district! If you know someone whose efforts over the past year (or beyond) deserve to be celebrated, consider nominating them! Downloadable nomination forms are available here.

The deadline for 2016 nominations is March 17, 2017. The 2016 Alexander Bajkov Award winner will be announced at our upcoming annual general meeting.

Thank you for your continued support,

The LWF team
